My Sentence . . . Oops, I Mean Our Cancer Diagnosis (Part 1)

If you listened to my last podcast episode and watched my recent video, you know finding a lump under my arm on New Years Day shook me to the core. The good news, as I mentioned, is all things are pointing in a very positive direction. One more surgery to get my final clearance.

Once I get that, I'll be back to slaying this world.

During this episode I want to share with you our cancer diagnosis journey which began in 2015. It’s a long one, so this is part 1 and episode 7 will be part 2. Ha, what timing, right?! I found a lump right at the time I wanted to share with you the very beginning of my cancer journey. Thus, the delay for this release.

Our cancer journey began while living in Canada when I went in for a routine annual physical. My mammogram ended up showing what could be a broken blood vessel, leading to additional mammogram imaging and an ultrasound. My doctor informed me these tests were most likely nothing to worry about, but not worrying was a task easier said than done. I was a bit nervous.

I've been through this scare before; it was just dense breast tissue last time. I didn't want to freak out for no reason. Why stress yourself out on the unknown? I tried not to fast forward too far into the future. I went to Princess Margaret Hospital for further testing, which has a state-of-the-art rapid diagnostic center. It was created by a woman who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She was so concerned with how many delays there were throughout her breast cancer journey and diagnosis that she decided to donate to the hospital to create this center for women. There, I got an ultrasound and biopsy. In the beginning, I was told not to worry - possibly pre-cancer. Ha! Did they just say cancer?! I don’t know about you, but if someone uses the word cancer to share health news with me, all I hear is cancer and then cue the Charlie Brown school teacher . . .

Many people that have had cancer rarely talk about the diagnosis process, the emotions that come with the unknown, and how it affects the loved ones around them. I actually googled cancer diagnosis stories, and the results were sparse. To me, this makes these two episodes all the more important to share.

Not only was it painful for me but for my family as well, which is why I have a special guest on this episode. My husband, Greg will share his version of the story and how cancer rocked his world as well. I want this episode to not only be for people who have had cancer, but for the family members and friends as well. Cancer is NOT a disease of one . . . it is a family disease.
